Marfa, Texas

Next week I am going to Marfa, Texas.

While only an eight hour drive, I’m breaking the trip into two days going and two days coming back. That way I’ll just drive half a day and drive only during day light hours. It’s part of my concessions to the aging process. My oldest son will have my itinerary and contact info. I’m taking a lot of lessons learned from my parents and particularly my dad from when after mother passed away.

A Quote From My Late Wife

To quote my late wife Miss Benita when she was diagnosed with terminal cancer “I’m not going to sit on the couch and wait to die.” She’d say that when asked why she continued to work. My spin is while my heart is broken because she passed away. I’m not going to sit around and wait to join her. Even with Covid-19 and the Delta variant I will keep on keeping on.

My Itinerary

When in Marfa, Texas I’ll be writing in the mornings, visiting art and sculpture galleries in the afternoons, and doing star gazing in the evening. I love the stars and am an amateur astronomer. The University of Texas McDonald Observatory is thirty-five miles away. I have scheduled and purchased tickets for a couple of nights of stargazing. I’ll also be taking my own telescope. I’ve been to the area before. Fifty years ago when attending university, I took courses in astronomy and went to the observatory for my course labs.

Write On

If past performance is any indication of future performance, I anticipate writing somewhere between one-hundred and fifty and two-hundred and fifty pages during my time in Marfa, Texas.
